Ας μιλήσουμε για μουσικά απωθημένα... Black Angels. Ο Christian Bland μας εξομολογείται ότι η πιο psych rock μπάντα ανυπομονεί να βρεθεί στην Ελλάδα και ελπίζει η επιθυμία τους να εκπληρωθεί με την περιοδεία που θα ακολουθήσει μετά την κυκλοφορία του τέταρτού τους LP. Το Austin Psych Festival, ο Roky Erickson, το καλλιτεχνικό ρεύμα Optical Art και η διαδικασία της ηχογράφησης του νέου τους δίσκου, βρέθηκαν στο επίκεντρο της συνομιλίας μας με τον κιθαρίστα των Black Angels.

Wild Thing: Κατά τη γνώμη μας στον τελευταίο δίσκο Phosphene Dream (2010) εξερευνάτε και άλλες πλευρές του ήχου σας και ακούγεστε πιο μελωδικοί σε σχέση με τις πρώτες δουλειές. Ηχογραφείτε κάποια καινούργια τραγούδια αυτή τη στιγμή και τι να περιμένουμε από το τέταρτο LP σας;

Christian Bland: Αυτή την εποχή δουλεύουμε πάνω στον τέταρτο δίσκο. Η ηχογράφηση άρχισε στις 20 Αυγούστου στο El Paso στο στούντιο Sonic Ranch και κράτησε σχεδόν ένα μήνα. Θα έλεγα πως το νέο άλμπουμ είναι ένας συνδυασμός των τριών προηγούμενων. Τα τραγούδια είναι πιο σύντομα όπως στο "Phosphene Dream", αλλά από την άλλη ενέχουν εκπλήξεις.

WT: Η μπάντα πήρε το όνομά της από ένα τραγούδι των Velvet Underground. Ποιες είναι οι επιρροές σας και ποια νέα συγκροτήματα ξεχωρίζετε;

CB: Σε όλους μας αρέσει η μουσική από τα 50s και τα 60s όπως και οι μοντέρνες μπάντες που εμπνέονται από αυτή τη μουσική περίοδο. Κάποιες από αυτές είναι οι Crystal Stilts, Clinic, Wooden Shjips, Night Beats, Dirty Beaches, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, A Place to Bury Strangers, Moon Duo, BJM, Τhe Black Lips, Tame Impala, The Growlers, θα μπορούσα να συνεχίσω έτσι για πολύ ακόμη...

WT: Πώς λειτουργείτε κατά την διαδικασία της σύνθεσης; Πρόκειται για ομαδική δουλειά;

CB: Κάθε τραγούδι προκύπτει διαφορετικά. Άλλοτε έχω την ιδέα κάποιου ριφ και δουλεύουμε όλοι μαζί γύρω από αυτό για να δομήσουμε ένα τραγούδι, άλλοτε ο Alex (Maas) ή εγώ έχουμε κάποιο έτοιμο κομμάτι και έπειτα προσθέτουμε ορισμένες λεπτομέρειες, ενώ υπάρχουν και στιγμές που μ' έναν μαγικό τρόπο γράφουμε όλοι μαζί κάποιο τραγούδι.

WT: Πείτε μας δύο λόγια για τα εξώφυλλα. Από πού είναι εμπνευσμένα;

CB: Τα έχω σχεδιάσει όλα εγώ. Εμπνέομαι από την Optical Art που αναπτύχθηκε τη δεκαετία του '60. Λατρεύω τις περιορισμένες προοπτικές των γραμμών, του χώρου και των χρωμάτων και τη δυνατότητα να δημιουργώ σχέδια που πάλλουν τις αισθήσεις των ματιών. H Bridget Riley και ο Julian Stanczak είναι δύο από τους αγαπημένους μου καλλιτέχνες αυτού του είδους.

WT: Υπήρχε δραστήρια ψυχεδελική μουσική σκηνή στο Austin όταν σχηματιστήκατε;

CB: H ψυχεδελική rock'n'roll σκηνή ξεκίνησε στο Texas την δεκαετία του '60 με τους 13th Floor Elevators. Εμείς απλώς βοηθάμε να παραμείνει ο θρύλος ζωντανός.

WT: Πραγματοποιήσατε μια περιοδεία με τον Roky Erickson το 2008. Υπάρχει περίπτωση να ηχογραφήσετε κάτι μαζί;

CB: Αυτό ήταν το αρχικό σχέδιο. Μας δόθηκαν κάποια ντέμο του Erickson που κάλυπταν μια περίοδο από την δεκαετία του '60 ως και την δεκαετία του '80. Επιλέξαμε δέκα από αυτά και τα ηχογραφήσαμε με την ελπίδα να έρθει κάποια στιγμή ο Roky και να βάλει τα φωνητικά. Δυστυχώς αυτό δεν έγινε ποτέ κι έτσι το υλικό απλώς κάθεται και σκονίζεται. Ελπίζω κάποια μέρα οι ηχογραφήσεις αυτές να έρθουν στην επιφάνεια.

WT: Πες μας, ποιες είναι οι δραστηριότητες της κολεκτίβας Reverberation Appreciation Society;

CB: Είναι μια ομάδα τεσσάρων ατόμων, οι οποίοι ξεκινήσαμε το Austin Psych Festival. Πρόκειται για τους Alex Maas, Rob Fitzpatrick, James Oswald και εμένα. Αρχικά οργανώσαμε το φεστιβάλ και στη συνέχεια συστήσαμε και την δισκογραφική εταιρία. Λατρεύουμε το reverb τα πρωινά της Κυριακής.

WT: Πώς ξεκίνησε το Austin Psych Festival; Παρακολουθώντας το υλικό των DVD που κυκλοφόρησαν σκεφτόμαστε αν αξίζει  να επισκεφθεί κανείς το φεστιβάλ ερχόμενος από την Ελλάδα, συνυπολογίζοντας και την οικονομική κατάσταση που επικρατεί στη χώρα μας;

CB: Σας το εγγυώμαι ότι αξίζει. Το Psych Fest άρχισε το 2008. Είχα την ιδέα να κάνουμε ένα «ψυχεδελικό» φεστιβάλ στο Austin. Σκέφτηκα ότι είναι το ιδανικό μέρος καθώς το εν λόγω μουσικό είδος γεννήθηκε εδώ. Με τους Black Angels περιοδεύαμε επί τρία χρόνια ως εκείνο το σημείο και με όλες τις άλλες μπάντες που παίζαμε μαζί εκείνη την εποχή σκεφτήκαμε γιατί να μην κάνουμε μια συναυλία - πάρτυ ένα Σάββατο… και από εκεί καταλήξαμε σε τριήμερο φεστιβάλ με ημερήσιο μέσο όρο επισκέψεων 1600 άτομα!

WT: Γνωρίζουμε τα side project με τα οποία έχεις ηχογραφήσει. Εκτός από αυτά, υπάρχουν άλλα projects στα οποία συμμετέχουν μέλη των Black Angels; Να περιμένουμε κάποια σχετική κυκλοφορία;

CB: Έχω ένα project με τον φίλο μου τον Lee από τους Night Beats. Το όνομά μας είναι UFO Club. Το LP μας κυκλοφόρησε στις 13 Αυγούστου. Ο Alex έχει επίσης ένα project που ονομάζεται Sweat Tea, αλλά δεν είμαι σίγουρος αν ασχολείται ακόμη μ' αυτό.

WT: Έχετε πραγματοποιήσει περιοδείες σε Ευρώπη και Η.Π.Α. αρκετές φορές. Διακρίνετε κάποια διαφοροποίηση στην ανταπόκριση προς τη μουσική σας από το εκάστοτε κοινό;

CB: Νομίζω ότι το ευρωπαϊκό κοινό ενθουσιάζεται περισσότερο με τη μουσική μας. Μπορεί να οφείλεται στο γεγονός ότι ερχόμαστε από ένα μακρινό μέρος γι' αυτούς.

WT: Είναι επιβεβαιωμένο ότι οι Black Angels  έχουν πολλούς φανατικούς οπαδούς στην Ελλάδα. Σε μια μικρή μουσική κοινότητα όπως αυτή της Αθήνας έχουμε μάθει ότι σας έχουν προσεγγίσει αρκετές φορές διάφοροι promoters για να σας φέρουν στην Ελλάδα. Για ποιο λόγο λοιπόν δεν σας έχουμε δει ακόμη επί σκηνής;

CB: Δεν είμαι πολύ σίγουρος για τους λόγους. Ανυπομονούμε πάντως να παίξουμε στην Ελλάδα. Ελπίζουμε στα πλαίσια της κυκλοφορίας του νέου δίσκου μας να μπορέσουμε να έρθουμε τελικά.

WT: Περιμένατε ποτέ ότι η μουσική σας θα έχει τόση ανταπόκριση; Επηρέασε η επιτυχία την προσωπική σας ζωή;

CB: Ούτε στα πιο άγρια όνειρά μου! Έμαθα να παίζω κιθάρα γύρω στα 20, οπότε φαντάζει κάπως εξωπραγματικό να περιοδεύω στο κόσμο παίζοντας κιθάρα. Ελπίζω να συνεχίσουμε να γράφουμε μουσική για όσο περισσότερο καιρό μπορούμε.

Time to talk about fixations in music... Black Angels. Christian Bland confesses that the most famous psych rock band at the moment is looking forward to coming to Greece and hopes to fulfill their wish with the tour following the release of their fourth LP. The Austin Psych Festival, Roky Erickson, the artistic trend of Optical Art and the process of recording their latest album were topics that monopolized our discussion with the famous guitarist.

Wild Thing: Hi guys! In my opinion your latest album Phosphene Dream explores new sides of the band and it sounds more melodic than the previous ones. Are you recording new songs at the moment? And what should we expect from the fourth LP?

Christian Bland: We're working on the 4th album right now. We start recording in El Paso at the Sonic Ranch on August 20th for a month. I'd say the new album is like all three albums combined. The songs are shorter like "Phosphene Dream", but they pack a rollercoaster ride.

WT: You named the band after a Velvet Underground song. What are your musical influences? Which new bands are you into?

CB: We all like old music from the 50s and 60s - the best - and modern bands who are inspired by that type of music. Some newer bands we dig are Crystal Stilts, Clinic, Wooden Shjips, Night Beats, Dirty Beaches, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, A Place to Bury Strangers, Moon Duo, BJM, The Black Lips, Tame Impala, The Growlers, I could go on forever...

WT: How does the group's songwriting process work? Is it a full band effort?

CB: Every song is different. Sometimes I'll bring in a riff and we'll work around it and structure a song, sometimes Alex (Maas) or I will bring in a fully structured song that just needs a few tweaks, and sometimes we all magically create a song together.

WT: Tell us about your album covers. What are they inspired by?

CB: I designed them all. I'm inspired by Optical Art from the 1960s. I love the limitless possibilities with lines, shapes, and colors and creating designs that vibrate & draw the eye in. Bridget Riley & Julian Stanczak are a couple of my favorites.

WT: Was there a vibrating psych scene in Austin when you were formed?

CB: Psychedelic rock'n'roll started here in 1965 with The 13th Floor Elevators. It's the birthplace of psych rock. We're just helping to keep the legacy alive.

WT: You took a tour with Roky Erickson back in 2008. Are there any plans for a recording collaboration?

CB: That was the original plan. We were given demos of his from the 60s thru the 80s. We chose our favorite ten and recorded all the backing tracks with the hope of having Roky come and sing them. But that never happened, and the tunes are sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Hopefuly someday they'll be revived.

WT: Tell us a few words about Reverberation Appreciation Society. What is it about?

CB: It's the group of four who started Austin Psych Fest. It's composed of Alex Maas, Rob Fitzpatrick, James Oswald, and myself. We organize the festival and have expanded into a record label as well. We worship Reverb on Sunday mornings.

WT: How did the Austin Psych Fest come up? Watching the visual material from the DVDs and taking into account the current economic situation in Greece, do you think it's worth coming to the 2013 event?

CB: I guarantee it's worth it. Psych Fest started in 2008. I had the idea of having a psychedelic music festival in Austin. I figured what better place than where the style of music was born. The Black Angels had been touring for about three years at that point, and with all the bands we met along the road we figured why not have a party one Saturday with all our buddies... and from there it's grown into a 3-day festival with over 1600/day attending.

WT: We know about your (Christian's) side projects. Apart from that, we would also like to know other bands that the members of The Black Angels are involved in. Can we expect any new material from them soon?

CB: I've also got a side project with my buddy Lee from the Night Beats. We're called the UFO Club. Our LP comes out August 13th. Alex has a side project call Sweet Tea, but I'm not sure if he's still doing that.

WT: You've toured Europe and the U.S. several times. Do you think there is a different response to your music between the fans of the two continents?

CB: I think people in Europe are more enthusiastic about our music. Maybe it's because we come from a faraway place.

WT: We know for a fact that The Black Angels have many fans in Greece. Being in a small musical community here in Athens we know that you've been approached several times by promoters. What's the reason we still haven't experienced seeing you on stage?

CB: I'm not really sure. We can't wait to come play there. Hopefully, after this next album comes out, which should be around February (2013), then we'll finally be able to come.

WT: Did you ever expect that you would become so successful? Did that affect your personal lives in any way?

CB: Never in my wildest dreams. I didn't learn how to play the guitar until I was 20, so it's pretty unreal to be touring the world playing the guitar. We hope to keep making new music together as long as we can.
