Meet the Rhythm River Trio

Με τον David γνωριστήκαμε τον Μάιο του 2005, μια μόλις μέρα πριν αναχωρήσουμε από το Λονδίνο με προορισμό το Hemsby. Τον συναντήσαμε τυχαία, ακούγοντας Little Richard και πίνοντας μπύρες στο Elephants Head, στο Camden Town. Ήμουν μαζί με τον Bill, τον Λευτέρη, τον Τάσο, τον Χρήστο και τον Ηλία όταν τον πρωτοείδαμε να κόβει βόλτες μέσα στην pub, με τίγκα μπριγιαντίνη στα μαλλιά και μια ταλαιπωρημένη κιθάρα στην πλάτη. Το ίδιο βράδυ, καταλήξαμε να πίνουμε ακόμη περισσότερες μπύρες και σφηνάκια παγωμένη… ρακή, με τον David και τον Τάσο να δίνουν ρεσιτάλ στην κιθάρα και τα φωνητικά. Λίγα χρόνια αργότερα, η παρέα βρέθηκε ξανά, αυτή τη φορά στο Screamin’ Fest, στην Ισπανία. Εκεί, διαπίστωσα πως η αγάπη του David για το αυθεντικό 50s rockabilly και φυσικά το αλκοόλ, είναι αδιαμφισβήτητη! Όταν λοιπόν έμαθα για τη νέα του μπάντα, τους Rhythm River Trio, αλλά και για το ‘Wild Side of Life’, τον πρώτο τους δίσκο στην γερμανική Rhythm Bomb Records, έσπευσα να τους ακούσω και γούσταρα με χίλια! Δεν είναι άλλωστε τυχαίο πως από την πρώτη μέρα «ίδρυσής» του μέχρι σήμερα το λονδρέζικο rockabilly trio εξακολουθεί να αλωνίζει στα μεγαλύτερα ευρωπαϊκά weekends και bars της φάσης και μάλιστα με μεγάλη επιτυχία. Stay Greasy λοιπόν με τον David, την φωνή των Rhythm River Trio!

WT: Σχηματίσατε την μπάντα πριν από περίπου δυο χρόνια. Σε ποια άλλα σχήματα συμμετείχατε πριν από τους Rhythm River Trio και γιατί επιλέξατε αυτό το όνομα;

Dave: Το συγκρότημα σχηματίστηκε το 2008 από εμένα και τον μπασίστα μας, τον Bruno, με τον οποίο κάναμε και τις πρώτες πρόβες. Αρχικά είχαμε δοκιμάσει τρεις κιθαρίστες. Οι δυο από αυτούς δεν ταίριαζαν στο στυλ και τον ήχο μας ενώ ο τρίτος, ο Jan, έφυγε από την Αγγλία και επέστρεψε στην Γερμανία για να δουλέψει με την doo wop μπάντα του, τους Retromantics. Με τον Rhys Jenkins γνωρίστηκα το 2009, σε ένα nightclub του Soho. Εκεί, κάτω από την επήρεια μεγάλων δόσεων αλκοόλ, δέχτηκε να παίξει μαζί μας. Ουσιαστικά αυτή ήταν η αρχική μας σύνθεση ενώ ο Bruno εξακολουθούσε να παίζει παράλληλα με τους Kansas City Cryers, την πρώτη μπάντα του. Τελικά, το 2010, ο Rhys αντικαταστάθηκε από τον τωρινό μας κιθαρίστα τον Morgan Willis που έχει παίξει με την Kick-em Jenny με την οποία μάλιστα είχαν βγάλει και δίσκο. Επιπλέον, ο Morgan έχει συνεργαστεί και με τον Lucky Marcel σε μια μπάντα από το Kettering, τους Red Tags. Το όνομα ‘Rhythm River Trio’ το εμπνεύστηκα από μια ταινία του Bing Crosby, το Rhythm on the river.

WT: Πώς και πότε «κόλλησες» με το Rockabilly και από ποιους καλλιτέχνες έχεις επηρεαστεί;

D. Η πρώτη μπάντα που είδα ζωντανά ήταν ο Crazy Cavan με τους Rhythm Rockers. Ήταν το 1981, ήμουν μόλις 15 χρονών και πήγαινα σχολείο. Ο κολλητός μου ο Dave, που τώρα παίζει σε ένα rockabilly group με το όνομα Western Electric, ήξερε ότι γούσταρα τις μουσικές του Eddie Cochran και του Gene Vincent και μου είχε προτείνει να πάμε μαζί. Πάντως, αυτό που με είχε εντυπωσιάσει ήταν τα κομμάτια που έβαζε ο DJ και που τα άκουγα για πρώτη φορά, όπως αυτά του Joe Clay. Μάλιστα, το ίδιο βράδυ, πήγα στο Rex Rockin' Records και αγόρασα μερικά σινγκλ. Σε εκείνο το λάιβ ήταν η πρώτη φορά που είδα από κοντά hep cats και θυμάμαι ότι ήθελα να γίνω κι εγώ σαν αυτούς. Οι επόμενες δύο μπάντες που άκουσα ήταν οι Flying Saucers και οι Riot Rockers, που έτυχε να παίζουν στο ίδιο venue στο Aylesbury. Το 1982 έπεσε στα χέρια μου ένα flyer για ένα weekender στο Perran Sands, στην Κορνουάλη και αποφάσισα να πάω με τον κολλητό μου. Από τότε γίναμε teds! Γενικά, όλο το weekender ήταν για teddyboys αλλά θυμάμαι πως έπαιζε και μια βρετανική neo-rockabilly μπάντα, οι Sharks, που μου άρεσαν πολύ και γούσταρα τον ήχο τους. Στη συνέχεια είδα ζωντανά μπάντες και καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Dave Philips and the Hot Rod Gang, οι Guana Batz, οι Caravans και οι Deltas. Αυτά ήταν τα σχήματα που με επηρέασαν. Ο κιθαρίστας μας ο Morgan είναι πολύ επηρεασμένος από τον Grady Martin που έπαιζε με τον Johnny Burnette, ενώ ο Bruno από τον Willie Dixon.

WT: Μίλησε μας για το Wild Side of Life, τον πρώτο σας δίσκο στην Rhythm Bomb Records.  Πώς θα χαρακτήριζες τον ήχο σας και ποιο είναι το αγαπημένο σου κομμάτι από το άλμπουμ;

D. Παίζαμε σε μια συναυλία στο Gruenspan στο Αμβούργο ως support στον JD McPherson, όταν ο Ralph από την Rhythm Bomb Records μας είδε και μας είπε ότι μας θέλει στην εταιρία του. Λίγους μήνες αργότερα, ταξιδέψαμε στο Βερολίνο για να ηχογραφήσουμε και να κάνουμε μια περιοδεία στη Γερμανία. Ο δίσκος ηχογραφήθηκε στο Lightning Recording Studio στο Βερολίνο που έχει εξοπλισμό από τα 50s και τα 60s!  Ήταν μια δύσκολη διαδικασία, κάποιες στιγμές έχανα τη φωνή μου και γι’ αυτό άρχισα να πίνω Jagermeister και Jim Beam σα να ήταν νεράκι! Προσπαθούμε να ακουγόμαστε όσο πιο κοντά γίνεται στο αυθεντικό rockabilly, ακόμα και όταν παίζουμε δικά μας τραγούδια. Το αγαπημένο μου τραγούδι από το άλμπουμ είναι το “Wild Side of Life”.

WT: Η πρώτη σας συναυλία ήταν στο ξακουστό Ace Café στο Λονδίνο. Πώς νοιώσατε όταν ανεβήκατε στη σκηνή;

D. Παίξαμε στο Ace Café στις 3 Ιουνίου 2009 αλλά λίγο νωρίτερα είχαμε συμμετάσχει σε μια φιλανθρωπική συναυλία που διοργανώθηκε σε μια pub στο Kent.  Ήταν μια ευκαιρία για να δούμε πως ακουγόμαστε. Στην ίδια pub έπαιζαν πολλά ακόμη συγκροτήματα ενώ το group που εμφανίστηκε πριν από εμάς είχε τον ήχο των Who, κάτι που με άγχωσε αρκετά. Πάντως όταν ανεβήκαμε στη σκηνή και ξεκινήσαμε, όλα πήγαν καλά και ο κόσμος γούσταρε.  Έτσι όταν έφθασε η στιγμή να παίξουμε στο Ace Café είχα λιγότερο άγχος μέχρι που ανακάλυψα ότι ανάμεσα στους θεατές βρίσκονταν και κάποιοι καλοί rock’n’roll μουσικοί, με αποτέλεσμα να αγχωθώ για μια ακόμη φορά! Ωστόσο παίξαμε καλά και όλα πήγαν περίφημα. Ένοιωσα πολύ ωραία που επιτέλους έπαιζα σε ένα δυνατό rockin’ venue και οι μπύρες κατέβαιναν πολύ ευχάριστα!

WT: Μέχρι στιγμής έχετε πάρει μέρος σε πολλά rockabilly weekends σε όλη την Ευρώπη ενώ έχετε παίξει και σε μερικά από τα καλύτερα rockabilly clubs του Λονδίνου. Μίλησε μας για αυτές τις εμπειρίες αλλά και για το συναίσθημα να παίζεις μπροστά σε ένα μεγάλο rockabilly κοινό.

D. Η πιο δυνατή εμπειρία στις συναυλίες είναι οι στιγμές πριν και μετά το λάιβ. Έχεις την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσεις σπουδαίους διοργανωτές, DJ’s αλλά και μπάντες. Για παράδειγμα, ήταν φανταστικό να βλέπεις backstage τον Johnny Farina (Santo and Johnny) στο Blue Monday, στη Λυόν της Γαλλίας.  Έπαιζε ζωντανά το “Sleepwalk” και παρακολουθούσα πίσω από τη σκηνή. Ήταν μια πολύ φορτισμένη συναισθηματικά στιγμή! Όπως επίσης να πίνεις σπιτικό ουίσκυ με τους B and the Bops backstage, να μένεις στα σπίτια των διοργανωτών, να βγαίνεις για φαγητό μαζί τους και να μιλάτε μόνο για μουσική. Μέχρι στιγμής, η καλύτερη και μεγαλύτερη συναυλία ήταν στο Juke Joint Jamboree  στο Gruenspan. Ο ήχος, τα φώτα και το κοινό ήταν εκπληκτικά! Επίσης, περάσαμε τέλεια και στο Boston Arms Rockabilly Club στο Λονδίνο, όπου παίζαμε support στον Royce Porter. Μάλιστα οι φίλοι μας Alice Dryscoll και Pedro Duarte ανέβηκαν μαζί μας στη σκηνή, έπαιξαν φυσαρμόνικα και κάναμε ντουέτα!  Ήταν ένα εξαιρετικό show που θα επαναληφθεί, αυτή τη φορά στο Dingwalls στο Λονδίνο τον Αύγουστο. Μια από τις πιο τρελές στιγμές που έχουμε ζήσει ήταν στο Αμβούργο, στο Twenty Flight Rock του Andy που μας έδινε συνέχεια ξύδια ενώ ήμασταν στη σκηνή.  Ήθελε να μας μεθύσει και τα κατάφερε μια χαρά!

WT: Ποια συγκροτήματα ακούς αυτή την περίοδο; Και αν είχες την ευκαιρία μοιραστείς τη σκηνή με έναν από τους πρωτοπόρους των 50s, ποιος θα ήταν;

D. Εγώ και ο Morgan ακούμε κυρίως αυθεντικό hillbilly όπως Al Ferrier και Eddie Noack.  Ο Bruno προτιμάει το αυθεντικό rockabilly. Σήμερα, οι αγαπημένες μου μπάντες είναι οι Bellfuries και ο Charlie Thompson. Αν είχα την ευκαιρία να παίξω με έναν από τους πρωτοπόρους, αυτός θα ήθελα να είναι ο Hank Williams. Όπως και να χει, κάνω ντουέτα μαζί του στο σπίτι μου, όταν βάζω δίσκους του στο πικάπ!

WT: Ποια είναι η γνώμη σου για τη rockabilly σκηνή σήμερα; Πόσο δυνατή είναι σε σύγκριση με περασμένες δεκαετίες;

D. Στο Λονδίνο η σκηνή είναι μικρή σε σύγκριση με τα 80s και τα 90s όπου μπορούσες να βγεις σε συναυλίες και πάρτυ κάθε βράδυ! Θυμάμαι, ακόμα και οι Τετάρτες στο Russell Arms στο Camden ήταν πίττα! Σήμερα οι συναυλίες και οι χοροί γίνονται κυρίως σε μηνιαία βάση αλλά οφείλω να ομολογήσω πως μαζεύουν πολύ κόσμο, ενώ κάθε Σαββατοκύριακο υπάρχει κάτι καλό για να πας. Ωστόσο γίνονται πολλά φεστιβάλ και rockabilly weekends σχεδόν σε κάθε χώρα της Ευρώπης. Αυτό είναι το μέλλον του rockabilly και πιστεύω ότι αυτή η φάση γίνεται ολοένα και μεγαλύτερη.

WT: Θέλουμε να μας εξομολογηθείς τα μελλοντικά σου πλάνα και το μεγαλύτερο... όνειρό σου!

D. Σε ό,τι αφορά το συγκρότημα, σχεδιάζουμε να ηχογραφήσουμε ένα 45άρι στην Rhythm Bomb Records μέχρι το τέλος του χρόνου. Γράφω καινούργιο υλικό και ελπίζω να ακολουθήσουν περισσότερα άλμπουμ και περισσότερα φεστιβάλ σε διαφορετικές χώρες όπως το Tear It Up στην Κροατία, όπου θα παίξουμε του χρόνου. Όνειρο μου είναι να γράψω και να ηχογραφήσω ένα δικό μου country κομμάτι που θα μπει στα αμερικανικά country charts!.

WT: Ένα μήνυμα για τα rockabillia στην Ελλάδα...

D. Ελπίζουμε να σας δούμε σε κάποιο κοντινό festival σύντομα.

We first met David in May 2005, just a day before leaving London bound for Hemsby. We met him by chance, listening to Little Richard and drinking beers at the Elephants Head, in Camden Town. I was with Bill, Lefteris, Tassos, Chris and Elias when we first saw him moving around in the pub with glossy hair and a troubled guitar on his back. That evening we ended up drinking beers and frozen shots of raki with David and Tassos giving recitals on guitar and vocals. A few years later, the same company found Dave at the Screamin’ Fest in Spain. There we realized that David's love for original 50s rockabilly and alcohol is indisputable! So when we heard about his new band, the Rhythm River Trio, and their first album on German label Rhythm Bomb Records,  entitled ‘Wild Side of Life’, we rushed to listen to it and - needless to say - liked a LOT! It’s no coincidence that from day one the London rockabilly trio thrashes all big European rockabilly weekends and bars with great success. So ‘Stay Greasy’ simply had to do an interview with David, the voice of the Rhythm River Trio!

WT:  You formed the band two years ago. Which were the first bands you played in and why did you decide to choose the name ‘Rhythm River Trio’?

Dave from RRT: Me and Bruno, the bass player, actually formed the band in 2008 and started rehearsing. We went through three guitarists, two did not play our style the way we wanted and the other, Jan, left to go back to Germany to work and play with his band the Retromantics, a doo wop band. In 2009 I met Rhys Jenkins in a nightclub in Soho and under the influence of alcohol he agreed to play with us. I think that was in May ‘09. This was my first band, Bruno was still in The Kansas City Cryers, his first band. Morgan Willis, who is now our lead guitarist, replaced Rhys in 2010; he has played with Kick-em Jenny. They made an album together. He also played with Lucky Marcel and a band from Kettering where he lived, called The Red Tags. I got the name ‘Rhythm River Trio’ from a Bing Crosby film called Rhythm on the River.

WT: How and when did you become part of the rockabilly scene and which musicians have influenced you the most?

D. The first band I saw was Crazy Cavan & the Rhythm Rockers in 1981. I was 15 and still at school. My friend Dave, who is now in a rockabilly band called Western Electric, knew I liked Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, and told me about the gig. But it was the dj playing songs I never heard before like Joe Clay that amazed me, and I bought some singles from Rex's Rockin’ Records that night. I also saw some hep cats for the first time and I thought I would love to look like that. So the next two bands I saw were The Flying Saucers and The Riot Rockers at the same town hall in Aylesbury. There was a flyer for a weekender in Perran Sands in Cornwall in ’82; so I decided to go with my mate. By then we were teds. It was more of a ted weekender but there was a band called the Sharks playing, an English neo-rockabilly band, that I thought “this is my kind of rockin’ ”. Later on also seeing Dave Phillips and the Hot Rod Gang, the Guana Batz, the Caravans and the Deltas. These were the bands that influenced me. Morgan is very influenced by Grady Martin who played with Johnny Burnette. And Bruno by Willie Dixon.

WT: Tell us something about your first album on Rhythm Bomb Records. How do you describe your sound and which is your favorite song on the record?

D. We were playing a gig at the Gruenspan in Hamburg supporting JD McPherson when Ralph from the Rhythm Bomb Records saw us and wanted us on his label. We went to Berlin later in the year to record and do a tour in Germany. We recorded at the Lightning Recording Studio in Berlin which has all this recording equipment from the 50s and 60s and we recorded onto reel to reel tape. It was very hard as I was loosing my voice, so I was drinking Jagermeister and Jim Beam like water! We try to sound as original to early rockabilly as we can, even to our own songs that we write. My favourite song on the album is Wild Side of Life.

WT: Your first gig was at the world famous Ace Cafe. How did you feel when you got on that stage?

D. We played the Ace Cafe on 3 June 2009 but we played a charity gig in Kent first in a pub to see how we would sound. There were other bands playing and the band that went before us sounded like the Who with lots of foot pedals which made me really nervous, but once we started it was OK and the crowd loved it. So by the time we played at the Ace Cafe I was a bit less nervous but there were a few rockin’ musicians in the audience; that soon made me nervous again! But we pulled it off and it went down well. It felt great to finally sing at a rockin’ venue and the beer went down very smoothly after.

WT: So far you have played a lot of rockabilly weekends all around Europe and some of the best rockabilly clubs in London. How is the experience of playing live in front of a big rockin’ crowd?

D. The most memorable thing about playing the gigs is usually after the gig or just before. Meeting the great promoters, djs and other bands, watching Johnny Farina backstage at the Blue Monday in Lyon, France, was amazing. He played “Sleepwalk” and I was watching from behind the curtain; it was emotional. Sharing Moonshine backstage with B and the Bops and staying at the promoters house and going out for a meal all together and talk about music (Morgan more technically, he is a fountain of knowledge!). The best gig and biggest so far was the Juke Joint Jamboree at the Gruenspan on the Reeperbahn - the sound, the lightening and an amazing crowd. We also had a great time at the Boston Arms Rockabilly Club in London where we supported Royce Porter and our friends Alice Dryscoll and Pedro Duarte came on stage with us for duets and some harmonica playing. It made a great show that we will be repeating at Dingwalls in London in August. The craziest time was at the Twenty Flight Rock in Hamburg run by Andy, who kept plying us with booze to get us drunk on stage and it worked.

WT: What kind of groups do you listen to? If you had the chance to play live with one of the pioneers of the 50s, who would it be?

D. Me and Morgan mainly listen to original hillbilly like Al Ferrier and Eddie Noack. Bruno prefers original rockabilly. Today my favourite contemporary bands are The Bellfuries and Charlie Thompson. If I had a chance to sing with one of the pioneers, it would be Hank Williams but then I do duet with him at home with my record player!

WT: What do you think of the rockabilly scene these days? How strong is it compared to past decades?

D. In London the scene is very small compared to the 80s and 90s when you could go out every night to a gig or a hop. Even Wednesdays at the Russell Arms in Camden would be packed. The venues now are mainly monthly, but they do get a good crowd and you can still find somewhere to go on most weekends. But now in Europe there are festivals popping up everywhere and weekenders in nearly every country. This is the future for the rockin’ scene that I think is getting bigger.

WT: Tell us something about your future plans and your biggest… dream!

D. As for the future of the band we will be recording a 45 on vinyl for Rhythm Bomb hopefully before the end of the year. I am writing more material and hopefully more albums will come, and more festivals to enjoy in different countries, like ‘Tear It Up’ in Croatia where we are playing next year. Biggest dream would be to write and record a country song of my own that gets in the US country charts.

WT: A message from you to the Greek rockabillies? 

D. And to all you Greek Rockabillies, we hope to see you at the nearest festival soon.
