Οι προερχόμενοι εκ Chicago Heavy Times ξεχωρίζουν από τα συγκροτήματα της HoZac Records, μια που συνδυάζουν το πρώιμο punk των Wipers μαζί με «πιασάρικα» ρεφρέν και υπνωτιστικές pop μελωδίες. Τους γνωρίσαμε από το ντεμπούτο τους στην ανερχόμενη στο χώρο εταιρεία, με τίτλο 'Jacker' και επικοινωνήσαμε με τον τραγουδιστή της μπάντας Bo Hansen, ο οποίος μας μίλησε για την έως τώρα πορεία του γκρουπ, αλλά και για τα μελλοντικά τους σχέδια.

WT: Είναι η πρώτη σας συνέντευξη για τον ελληνικό τύπο;

Bo: Ναι! Για την ακρίβεια είναι η πρώτη μας δημοσιευμένη συνέντευξη!

WT: Πες μας δυο λόγια για το συγκρότημα, από πού πρόεκυψε το όνομα 'Heavy Times'?

Bo: Οι Heavy Times αποτελούνται από τους Bo Hansen, Matt Courtade, Matthew Hord και Luca Cimarusti. Είμαστε από το Chicago, και επιλέξαμε αυτό το όνομα επειδή είμαστε χοντροί και θλιμμένοι!!!!

WT: Πώς θα περιέγραφες τη μουσική σας; Ποια είναι η θεματολογία των στίχων σας;

Βo: Προσπαθούμε η μουσική μας να είναι «πιασάρικη» και να «μένει» στο μυαλό αυτών που την ακούν. Είναι ταυτόχρονα pop και αισιόδοξη, αλλά και απελπισμένη και αγωνιώδης. Βασικά είναι punk με επιπρόσθετα στοιχεία... Οι στίχοι μας είναι σκοτεινοί και εκφράζουν τη δυσαρέσκεια μας για το ποιοι είμαστε.

WT: Το rock'n'roll σημαίνει για σας μόνο ψυχαγωγία ή και κάτι παραπάνω;

Bο: Το rock'n'roll θα πρέπει να θέτει ερωτήματα και να μην κλείνεται σε στεγανά. Πρέπει να έχει πολιτιστικό αντίκτυπο. Τα video games ψυχαγωγούν, το rock'n'roll καταστρέφει ζωές!!!!

WT: Κυκλοφορήσατε το ντεμπούτο σας με τίτλο Dead στην Rotted Tooth Recordings και ακολούθησε το EP Too Many Dreamers το οποίο βγήκε σε 10 μόνο αντίτυπα !!! Στη συνέχεια υπογράψατε στη HoΖac. Πώς πρόεκυψε αυτή η συνεργασία και πώς σας επηρέασε σαν μπάντα;

Βo: Ο ιδιοκτήτης της HoZac, Todd Novak, επικοινώνησε μαζί μας μέσω του myspace, ζητώντας μας να κάνουμε ένα 7ιντσο. Πήγε καλά και έτσι μας πρότεινε να ηχογραφήσουμε ένα LP. Υπό την ετικέτα της HoΖac η μουσική μας προβλήθηκε πολύ περισσότερο και εντάχθηκε σε κάποια πλαίσια που ως τότε δεν υπήρχαν. Το EP Too Many Dreamers αρχικά συμπεριλαμβανόταν σε μια κασέτα με 10 τραγούδια με τίτλο Street Rash που την μοίραζα στους φίλους μου. Ένας λοιπόν απ’ αυτούς, ο Joel Rakowski, την ηχογράφησε σε βινύλιο σε 10 μόνο κόπιες χωρίς να το γνωρίζουμε και την ανέβασε στο ίντερνετ! Ο γαμιόλης ! Να επισημάνω ότι το Dead ουσιαστικά δεν είναι ο πρώτος μας δίσκος, μια που πριν απ’ αυτόν είχαμε κυκλοφορήσει 3 κασέτες!

WT: Ποιες είναι οι επιρροές σας; Ποιες άλλες μπάντες θεωρείτε κοντά στο στυλ σας;

Bo: Όλοι μας μεγαλώσαμε ακούγοντας punk και thrash. Θεωρώ ότι έχουμε επηρεαστεί από τις κυκλοφορίες της SST Records, τους Wipers, τους Beat Happening, την pop punk και από τις συλλογές Back From The Grave! Ακούμε όμως πολλά διαφορετικά είδη μουσικής, πολλές επιρροές μας είναι ετερόκλητες - από ABBA και Slayer μέχρι Thompson Twins και Beach Boys!!

WT: Ακούσαμε ένα κρυμμένο κομμάτι στη σελίδα σας στο Facebook με τίτλο "Might Not Shoot Myself" το οποίο μας θύμισε τους Wipers! Τι γνώμη έχεις για αυτό;

Βο: Μας συγκρίνουν συχνά με τους Wipers, προσωπικά το θεωρώ γαμάτο καθώς είναι μια από τις αγαπημένες μου μπάντες. Το κύριο θέμα του τραγουδιού το έγραψε ο Matt, που είναι fan των Pixies. Θα έλεγα πως είναι μια πιο punk εκδοχή ενός κομματιού των Pixies!!!

WT: Με ποια συγκροτήματα ή καλλιτέχνες θα θέλατε να μοιραστείτε τη σκηνή;

Βo: Έχουμε ήδη παίξει με πολλές σπουδαίες μπάντες. Η μουσική σκηνή του Chicago είναι πρωτοπόρα αν και άγνωστη στο ευρύτερο κοινό. Υπάρχουν πολλές μπάντες στην πόλη μας που τα «σπάνε», όπως οι Outside World, οι Running, οι Zath και οι Cave για να αναφέρω μερικά μόνο ονόματα. Εκτός Chicago πάντως, περάσαμε πολύ καλά παίζοντας με τους Royal Headache και τον Ty Segall.

WT: Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σας για το μέλλον; Υπάρχει περίπτωση να περιοδεύσετε στην Ευρώπη;

Bo: Θα θέλαμε πολύ να περιοδεύσουμε στην Ευρώπη, αλλά γαμώτο μόλις που πληρώνουμε το νοίκι μας!!!! Προς το παρóν εστιάζουμε στη μουσική μας και ελπίζουμε για το καλύτερο.

WT: Ηχογραφείτε καινούργιο δίσκο αυτή την περίοδο; Θα υπάρξει ίσως κάποια αλλαγή στο ύφος σας;

Βo: Έχουμε ήδη έτοιμα τρία 7ιντσα που θα κυκλοφορήσουν τον Σεπτέμβριο. Tο νέο μας LP έρχεται από τη HoZac τον ερχόμενο Νοέμβριο. Δεν θα υπάρξει κάποια ουσιαστική αλλαγή στο ύφος μας, απλά ο ήχος μας θα είναι «μεγαλύτερος» και πιο καθαρός, μια που είναι η πρώτη φορά που ηχογραφούμε σε κανονικό studio!!!

Chicagoans Heavy Times stand out from bands in the roster of HoZac Records, combining the early punk sound of the Wipers with "catchy" pop choruses and hypnotic melodies. We were first 'acquainted' with them by listening to their debut album for that label, entitled 'Jacker'. We then felt like learning more about them, so we contacted the band's singer Bo Hansen who talked to us about the progress the group has made so far and about their future plans.

WT: Hi guys! Is this your first interview for the Greek Media?

Bo: Yes. This will actually be our first print interview ever.

WT: Introduce the band to the Greek fans. How did the name 'Heavy Times' come up?

Bo: Heavy Times is Bo Hansen, Matt Courtade, Matthew Hord and Luca Cimarusti. We're from Chicago USA. We're called Heavy Times because we're sad and fat.

WT: How would you describe your music? What are your lyrics about?

Bo: Our music attempts to be very catchy with a lot of hooks. It's really poppy and upbeat but also desperate and unsettling. It's basically punk music with something else. Our lyrical content tends to be on the downer side, mostly it's about being unsatisfied with your place in the world.

WT: Does rock'n'roll music mean just entertainment to you, or is it something more?

Bo: Rock'n'roll should raise questions and be unsettling. It should have some sort of cultural impact. Video games are for entertainment. Rock'n'roll ruins lives.

WT: You released your debut LP Dead through Rotted Tooth Recordings, followed by an EP Too Many Dreamers printed only in 10 copies!!! After that you signed for HoZac Records. How did that come about and how much did it affect the band?

Bo: Todd Novak (the owner of HoZac) actually just hit me up through our myspace asking to do a 7" - the 7" did well so he asked us to do an LP. Being on HoZac has definitely given us more exposure and has seemed to have given our music some sort of legitimacy that it didn't have before. Too many Dreamers was originally a 10 song cassette called Street Rash that I made just to give to friends. My friend Joel Rakowski recorded it and made 10 lathe cut records on old laser discs without telling us and put em on the internet, the fuck! Also it should be noted that Dead isn't our first album, we had 3 releases on cassette before that.

WT: What are your influences? Which bands do you consider closer to your music style?

Bo: We all grew up listening to punk and thrash and I think that really influence comes through; SST records stuff, Wipers, embarrassing pop punk, Beat Happening and Back from the Grave compilations. We listen to a wide range of music though - a lot of our influences are pretty far out: ABBA, Slayer, Thompson Twins, and definitely Beach Boys.

WT: We’ve listened to a hidden track on Facebook called "Might Not Shoot Myself". It reminded me a lot of the great Wipers. What’s your opinion?

Bo: We get compared to the Wipers a lot, which is cool with me because they are one of my favorite bands. Matt wrote the main lead to that song and he is a big fan of the Pixies. I'd say it's a more punk version of a Pixies song.

WT: Which band or artist would you mostly like to share the scene with?

Bo: I would say that we 're already sharing the scene with a ton of great bands. The Chicago music scene is rad, even though it's unbeknownst to the rest of the world. There are a bunch of bands killing it in the city: Outside World, Running, Zath, Cave - just to name a few. The best bands we 've played with from outside of Chicago would have to be Royal Headache and Ty Segall.

WT: What are your future plans? Are we going to see you in Europe soon?

Bo: We would love to make it to Europe, but fuck, I can hardly pay my rent. I guess we will see what happens. For now we are just going to focus on our music and hope for the best.

WT: Are you recording a new album? Can we expect any shift of direction in your music style?

Bo: We have three 7"s coming out in September and we have a new LP coming out on HoZac in November 2012. There really hasn't been a shift in the direction of our music style, but this album sounds bigger and cleaner because we recorded in a real studio.
