Οι Iron Man είναι μια doom μπάντα. Και δεν είναι ότι απλά παίζουν doom metal μουσική, είναι καταραμένοι οι ίδιοι. Βλέπεις, αν και ενεργοί από τα τέλη των 80s, η πλήρως επιμεταλλωμένη πανοπλία - στολή τους, όσο φοβερή κι αν ήταν, τους απέτρεπε από το να εκτεθούν σε μεγαλύτερο κοινό. Και οι αλλαγές στο line-up, ως μέρος της διαδικασίας των τεχνικών βελτιώσεων δε βοήθησαν σε αυτό. Το Wild Thing έχει τη χαρά να συνομιλεί με τον Alfred Morris III, τον εδώ και χρόνια ηγέτη του συγκροτήματος. Μιλάει απλά και με μια δόση ενθουσιασμού. Δεν έχει λόγο να πράξει διαφορετικά. Ο πρόσφατος δίσκος τους στη Rise Above 'South of the Earth' είναι πιθανόν ο τέλειος δίσκος από τους Iron Man και παραείναι καλός για να είναι απλά ένα κόμικ...

Wild Thing: Χαίρετε και συγχαρητήρια για το νέο σας δίσκο, South of the Earth! Μπήκε ήδη στο top ten της φετινής μου λίστας με τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ. Τι ανταπόκριση έχετε ως τώρα;

Alfred Morris: Γεια και σε ευχαριστώ!! Πω πω, κατευθείαν στο top-10 σου... φανταστικά! Η ανταπόκριση είναι πολύ καλή μέχρι στιγμής. Οι οπαδοί των Iron Man ανά τον κόσμο είναι ιδιαίτερα ενθουσιασμένοι.

WT: Κατά την άποψή μου ο καινούριος σας τραγουδιστής, Dee Calhoun, και αυτός ο εξαίσιος ήχος του μπάσου που δημιουργήσατε, είναι τα πιο αξιομνημόνευτα στοιχεία αυτού του δίσκου. Με ποιο τρόπο πιστεύεις ότι διαφέρει με τους προηγούμενους δίσκους;

ΑM: Οφείλεται βασικά σε αυτόν τον κορυφαίο παραγωγό μας, τον Frank Marchand! Πάντα δημιουργούσαμε μουσική που θα άρεσε και στους οπαδούς μας. Απλά δεν είχαμε έναν παραγωγό σαν και αυτόν που είχαμε στο I Have Returned και το τώρα στο South of the Earth. Ο Frank ξέρει τους Iron Man πολύ καλά και γνωρίζει πώς να «βγάλει» τον καλύτερό μας εαυτό!

WT: Γιατί διαλέξατε αυτή τη μοντέρνα, δουλεμένη στον υπολογιστή εικόνα για το εξώφυλλο, αντί να προτιμήσετε τον παλιό καλό τρόπο όπως μια φωτογραφία ή ένα σκίτσο/ζωγραφιά;

ΑM: Σε αυτό το νέο δίσκο, θέλαμε κάτι που θα τραβήξει την προσοχή των ακροατών κατευθείαν! Το artwork σε αυτή την εικόνα είναι πολύ δυνατό και δένει με το cd τέλεια.

WT: Πώς προέκυψε η συνεργασίας σας με τη Rise Above;

ΑM: Έστειλα στο Lee Dorrian την τελική μίξη του cd και το λάτρεψε. Χάρηκε που έπειτα από τόσα χρόνια, οι Iron Man ακόμα είχαν αυτό το βαρύ στυλ και ήχο. Μέσα σε διάστημα δύο μηνών, είχαμε υπογράψει τα συμβόλαια κα δουλεύαμε για το βίντεο κλιπ του "Hail to the Haze".

WT: Θα ήθελες να μοιραστείς μαζί μας περισσότερες πληροφορίες σχετικά με τη θεματολογία των στίχων και τι σε εμπνέει να γράφεις;

ΑM: Ο τρόπος που οι Iron Man έγραφαν πάντα δεν άλλαξε. Κάθε μέλος μπορεί να δημιουργήσει τον ήχο του σε κάθε τραγούδι. Ο τραγουδιστής μπορεί να γράψει τους στίχους του από τα συναισθήματα που του προκαλεί η μουσική. Αυτά που ακούς στους στίχους και τη φωνή του, είναι αυτά που νοιώθει!

WT: Υπάρχετε από τα τέλη τις δεκαετίας του '80 αλλά αυτός είναι μόλις ο πέμπτος σας δίσκος. Πώς κι έτσι;

AM: Πάντα υπήρχε πρόβλημα με το line-up. Δε μπορούσα να διατηρήσω το line-up μαζί για μεγάλα χρονικά διαστήματα! Μέρος αυτού του προβλήματος ήταν οι μουσικές διαφωνίες και τα πράγματα δεν έτρεχαν όπως θα ήθελα. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που κάθε cd έχει κάποιο καινούριο μέλος! Στα τέλη του 2000 πάλι, έπρεπε να κάνω διάλειμμα λόγω οικογενειακών υποχρεώσεων! Το 2006 ξανάρχισα έχοντας manager και νέους μουσικούς.

WT: Ξέρω ότι είσαι οπαδός των Black Sabbath, οπότε θα ήθελα τη γνώμη σου για το νέο τους άλμπουμ, το 13.

ΑM: Πιστεύω ότι είναι εξαιρετικός δίσκος! Ακούγεται σα να σκέφτηκαν πώς έγραφαν τραγούδια στην αρχή και πραγματοποίησαν μια βουτιά στο παρελθόν! Είναι θαυμάσιο!

WT: Είστε στον doom metal χώρο εδώ και αρκετό καιρό. Επίσης στο δίσκο σας The Passage του 1994 συμπεριλάβατε ένα ορχηστρικό τραγούδι με το όνομα "Tony Stark", το όνομα δηλαδή του alter ego του ήρωα των κόμιξ Iron Man. Σήμερα η doom σκηνή είναι τεράστια σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα και ο Iron Man είναι ξανά ένας από τους πιο "trendy" σούπερ ήρωες λόγω των κινηματογραφικών ταινιών. Η ερώτηση είναι η εξής: Πιστεύεις ότι, μιλώντας πάντα για τέχνη, οι διαχρονικές αξίες πάντα επιστρέφουν ανεξαρτήτως από τις τάσεις που η βιομηχανία δημιουργεί;

ΑM: Αυτό είναι πολύ σωστό. Έτσι θα ακούγονται πάντα οι Iron Man, φρέσκοι σε κάθε ακρόαση. Γράφουμε ελεύθερα, οπότε δεν υπάρχει τίποτα παλιό και σκονισμένο στα τραγούδια μας! Πάντα φρέσκοι με καλή ενέργεια!

WT: Τι επιφυλάσσει το μέλλον για τους Iron man; Έχετε σχέδια για ευρωπακή περιοδεία;

ΑM: Γράφουμε τραγούδια για το νέο μας δίσκο και προετοιμάζουμε την περιοδεία. Ναι, οι ημερομηνίες καθορίζονται ήδη τη στιγμή που μιλάμε! Οι οπαδοί μας ας είναι έτοιμοι για μια επίσκεψη των Iron Man στη χώρα τους!

WT: Ευχαριστώ για τη συνέντευξη! Ο επίλογος δικός σου!

ΑM: Σε ευχαριστώ Φάνη για την ευκαιρία να έρθουμε σε επαφή με τους οπαδούς μας. Είμαστε χαρούμενοι που οι οπαδοί μας είναι κοντά μας όλα αυτά τα χρόνια!!! Έχουμε ακόμα περισσότερη φανταστική μουσική καθ' οδόν όπως και ένα σόου γεμάτο ενέργεια! Θα σας δούμε όλους σύντομα!

Iron Man are a doom band, not only playing kick-ass doom metal music -- they are doomed themselves. You see, even if they are active since the late 80s, their full metal armor suit, magnificent as it may be, prevented them from being exposed to a bigger audience. Line-up changes as part of mechanical modifications didn't help either. Wild Thing has the pleasure of speaking with Alfred Morris III, the long time leader of the band. He speaks plain and simple, with a hint of enthusiasm. He has no reason to do otherwise. Their latest album for Rise Above Records 'South of the Earth' might be the perfect Iron Man album and is too good to be just a comic book...

Wild Thing: Hello and congratulations on your new album, South of the Earth! It is already in my top-10 list of this year's best albums. What is the feedback you are receiving so far?

Alfred Morris: Hello and thank you!! Wow, right into your top-10!! That is fantastic!!!! The feedback has been very good so far! Iron Man fans around the world are very excited!

WT: In my opinion, your new lead singer, Dee Calhoun, and that marvellous bass sound you created are the most enjoyable elements of the album. In what way do you feel that South of the Earth differs from your previous records?

AM: It basically comes down to having a great producer like Frank Marchand! We have always created the music that we thought fans would like. We just did not have a top producer like we have had on I Have Returned and now with South of the Earth. Frank knows Iron Man very well and he knows how to get the best performance out of us!!

WT: Why did you choose this modern, computer analyzed image for the cover, instead of going the old school way with a picture or a photograph?

AM: With this new CD, we wanted something that would grab the fans attention right away!! The art in this picture is very strong! It goes along with the CD perfectly.

WT: How did your co-operation with Rise Above Records come about?

AM: I sent Lee Dorrian the final mix of the CD and he loved it. He was glad that after all these years Iron Man still had the heavy style and sound. In about two-weeks time we had contracts signed and we were working on the video for "Hail to the Haze".

WT: Would you like to share some extra information on the lyrical themes and what inspires you to write them?

AM: The way Iron Man has always written songs has not changed. Each member is able to create their sound to each song. The vocalist is able to create his lyrics from what he is feeling from the music. What you hear in his lyrics and voice is what he feels!!

WT: You have been around since the late eighties and yet this is your fifth full length album. Why is that?

AM: There was always a problem with the line-up. I could not keep the same line-up together for any length of time! Musical differences were part of it and things were not happening fast enough for them. That's why each CD has someone new in the band! By late 2000 I had to take off to be a family man! By 2006 I started over again with a manager and new players!

WT: I know you are a big Black Sabbath fan, so I would like your opinion on their latest album, 13.

AM: I think it is a great album! It sounds like they thought about how they wrote songs in the beginning and went back to the drawing board!! Brilliant!

WT: You have been into the doom metal scene for quite a while. Also on your 1994 album The Passage you included an instrumental entitled "Tony Stark" - after the alter ego of the comic book hero Iron Man. Nowadays the doom metal scene is huge worldwide and Iron Man is, once again, one of the most trendy superheroes due to the movie franchise. My question is, do you feel that, when it comes to any form of art, timeless values will always make a comeback no matter what trends the industry is creating?

AM: That is very true. That is the way Iron Man will always sound, fresh with each listen. We write freely, so there is nothing old and dusty about our songs! Always fresh with good energy!

WT: What does the future hold for Iron Man? Any plans for a European tour?

AM: We are writing songs for the next CD and preparing to tour. Yes, dates are being worked out as we speak! Our fans should watch for Iron Man coming to their country soon!!

WT: Thank you for this interview! Final words are yours!

AM: Thank you Fanis for the chance to reach the Iron Man fans. Iron Man is happy that our fans are still with us after all these years!!! We have more incredible music coming and a very energetic live show!!! See you all very soon!!
